Mr. David O'Brart has been a Consultant Ophthalmic Surgeon in private practice and at Guy's and St Thomas' NHS Foundation Trust in London since 1996. The Guy's and St Thomas' group contain one of the world's leading medical schools and the Ophthalmology Department has an excellent reputation both in the UK and internationally. Mr O'Brart was the director of Glaucoma and Corneal Laser and Refractive Surgery within this department from 1996 to 2006 and has now moved to become the director of Refractive, Cornea and Anterior Segment Surgery.

Following his qualification as an Ophthalmic Surgeon in 1990, he trained in corneal and small-incision cataract surgery. He spent two years at the United Medical and Dental Schools, University of London, investigating the role of Excimer Laser Refractive and Corneal surgery. This research led to the completion of a Doctorate in Medicine. Upon completion of his ophthalmic surgical training at St. Thomas' Hospital, London and Addenbrooke's Hospital, Cambridge, he undertook a fellowship with Professor Weinreb at the internationally renowned Shiley Eye centre in San Diego, California, where he studied advanced techniques in Glaucoma. Mr. O'Brart is a council member of the United Kingdom and Ireland Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgeons, a council member and secretary of the British Society of Refractive Surgeons and past-president and

current secretary of the Southern Ophthalmological Society. He has organised and chaired numerous symposia on refractive and corneal surgery and glaucoma at national and international meetings. He has co-authored books on corneal topography, refractive and corneal surgery and contributed numerous chapters to international ophthalmic text books. He is a member of the microsurgical skills committee, an examiner and specialist advisor to the National Institute for Clinical Excellence for the Royal College of Ophthalmologists. He continues to take an active interest in research in both the field of refractive and corneal surgery, intraocular lens technology and glaucoma with over seventy scientific publications in leading peer-reviewed Ophthalmic journals and an international reputation in the field of corneal laser and refractive surgery.
